How do same sex wedding couples go about selecting their wedding cake? Do you they bring you photos and have ideas in mind or do they look to you for guidance?
The creative process is very much the same! I ask couples to bring in ideas and inspiration from their lives and to share with me the visual plans for their reception.
We look at everything related to the occasion – stationery and invitation, the ambiance of the location, the season of the year and the time of the day, what they’ll be wearing, the floral displays, the linen and decorations, and so forth.
Couples also have favorite colors and textures, and often they like to include elements from their life together.

Are there trends in same sex wedding cakes?
The major trend is to customize everything, but I don’t see a particular style or trend – yet! Same-sex weddings are relatively new, and therefore there are not many traditions to follow.

Are same sex wedding cakes the same as other wedding cake styles or would you say they differ?
I have to say that while female couples usually opt for romantic and floral cakes, male couples are much more specific with their choices. They usually want a very textural cake, and draw inspiration from their professional affiliation with architecture and fashion.

I know that there’s a trend of adding a “groom’s cake” to the regular wedding cake for weddings today. Do you see this with same sex couples too?
Yes! We’ve provided to some elaborate celebrations both a joint wedding cake and two separate groom’s cake. That was a lot of fun for us to create!
What do you want people to know about same sex wedding cakes/wedding trends/styles?
We keep in mind that we’re providing a cake to celebrate two people joining in marriage, and that their union should come first. Of course, I love showing off with our cake designs, but as I like to say, “There’s the right cake for the right couple.” Therefore I try not to assume what will please our clients, and offer our craft in the service of their vision.
